Story of stuff

Today everybody knows that we live in a consumption society, “we shop until we drop” and we don’t do anything about it, this is our lifestyle we are used to, so we keep going. A sad thing about all this consumption is that a lot of people can’t handle it, they shop for money that they don’t have and they loose a lot of things, their jobs, houses, families because of this behavior. In Sweden many of us have probably seen the TV-show “Lyxfällan” where people can get help from experts how they should continue with their loans and bills, how they can pay them of. This TV-show is an evidence of our society, that we have gone too far, that some of us can’t handle it anymore.

I think that many of us are used to consume and we try to recycle instead to compensate for our consumption. A lot of people are very good at recycling but I’m familiar with the feeling “I’m one in a million and I won’t make a different” but that’s not true. I believe that one person can make a different like the man in “Story of stuff” (read the part of 10 recommendations for another way). A student asked a man about how he recycled and he answered “I start to tell one person about recycling and then I tell another person”. This man was familiar with the problems and he told other people about it so they also could help to make a different.

Another thing that I felt was that “Story of stuff” is something for the American people because like Annie said, it’s different between the U.S and Europe, we consume the same thing but in Europe without toxic and pollution. So, why can’t the American people also consume their stuff without toxic and pollution?

  1. The "shop until you drop" slogan is very much true and many of us live after it. So I hope that the same people start to live in the same way as the man you are telling us about instead. Let us hope that his Word of Mouth method is working so that more people start to recycle. One thing you tell that I don´t understand is your last sentence where you say that Europe consume the same stuff but without the toxic and pollution. I mean; it creates pollutions even when we in Europe consume because the most stuff is manufactured in Asia.

  2. The fact that people live beyond there means is a problem that I think will be bigger and bigger. People do not that the same respect for money anymore and the leads to this kind of problems. Many of the problems mentioned in “The Story of Stuff” are a result of this lack of respect for money.

  3. I think that the finance crisis in combination with the global recession will force people to think different. The stock market has gone down, the real estate market has collapsed in some parts of the world, and banks have become more restrictive when granting loans and the unemployment worldwide is escalating. Let´s hope that one of the positive effects of all this will lead to better habits and that people stop thinking “more and more” and “bigger and bigger”.

  4. We humans are easy to manipulate and consume more than we needs. That people living over their resources I think are more common than we think, and the problem are becoming bigger and bigger. People do not have any respect for money anymore. If the money runs out is it easy to pay with credit cards and then paying these loans with more loans. Everything become a bad circle and very hard to getting out from. I think the financial crises like exist now are getting many people an eye opener.
